How do you know when you’ve found your style?
Often on I hear the importance of finding your own style, sometimes it seems to me that finding your own style becomes an obsessive goal.
In some cases (and I do not speak only of figurative art) I think it is reduced to repropose those (or in some cases that only) works that have had a good response. As if one confuses his own style adapting it to what brings approval and success.
I remember a Chinese proverb that says: "When the wise man points to the moon, the fool looks at his finger". According to my brief and limited experience all this can lead to feel trapped in something that with time no longer reflects us.
Focusing on the creative process rather than assigning a style to an artist (i.e., repeating rather than investigating) is, in my opinion, far more fascinating. I would rather discuss recognizability, which I describe better as follows: "This is definitely a work by artist X!" must be said by the person approaching the piece.
Without requiring all of the pieces to be identical.
And so, after a long period dedicated to the abstract landscapes, I find myself attracted and fascinated by shapes that fit together gently, by colors created by mixing two/three starting colours endlessly and I can’t resist... I leave for this new journey.
I am inspired by a phrase attributed to Buddha that says: "You cannot travel on a road without being the road yourself".
